Vandals desecrate Holocaust memorial in western Russia
A memorial to some 2,000 Jews killed by the Nazis during WWII as well as a number of gravestones at the adjoining cemetery were desecrated in western Russia.
The desecration took place at the “Golubaya Dacha”, known as the Blue House, in Nevel, in the Pskov region, south of St. Petersburg.
The Blue House is located near the town of Nevel and once housed the country home of the Tsarist chief of police, painted blue. On the site of some former summer residences, the Nazis set up a ghetto where they rounded up the Jews from all the surrounding villages. The ghetto was liquidated in September 1941.
In the post-war years, a Jewish cemetery was established at the memorial site. In May this year, an Avenue of the Righteous was established there to commemorate those who had saved local Jews during WWII.
