“I got hit with a piece of flack that came through the plane. It was on the mission over Munich. And I felt like someone hit me with a bat on my shins. And I fell forward. I thought that my whole leg was shot off, that’s how numb it was. And I remember asking the Navigator who was close by to check to see if my leg was still there. When I came home the first thing my mother did was feel me all over, because I told her I got hit in the leg. And she really didn’t know what to expect.
And then when she saw that it was okay, she stopped crying.”
