About the Young Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

The Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra is Israel’s national youth orchestra. It is directed by the Jerusalem Music Centre – Mishkenot Shaananim, which is a leading nation-wide organization that nurtures young excelling musicians throughout the country. The orchestra comprises 100 young excelling musicians ages 14–18. The Young IPO convenes twice yearly in boarding school conditions, in the winter and during the summer vacation, for inspiring gatherings with international conductors and leading Israeli educators, concluding with festive concerts. We believe strongly that outstanding young musicians from throughout the country should have a chance to come together to interact with their musical peers and experience music making at the highest level and, irrespective of their place of residence or financial means.

In spite of its ‘youth’ status, the YIPO instills in its participants a level of discipline and musical excellence on par with that found in professional orchestras, giving its participants musical experiences that shape their development and accompany them for years to come.

About our Conductor & Speaker: Lahav Shani

Lahav Shani, the designate Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, took over as Chief Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2018, being the youngest Chief Conductor in the orchestra’s history. In the 2017-18 season, he became Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, following a number of appearances with the orchestra since his debut in 2015, including a major European tour in 2016. He also works regularly with the Berlin Staatskapelle, both at the Berlin Staatsoper and in symphonic concerts. Recent and upcoming highlights as a guest conductor include engagements with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Berlin Radio Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. His close relationship with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra started in 2007, when he performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto under the baton of Zubin Mehta and continued in the following years as both a pianist and a double-bass player.

Lahav Shani was born in Tel Aviv in 1989 and started his piano studies aged six with Hannah Shalgi, continuing with Prof. Arie Vardi at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, Tel Aviv University. He went on to complete his studies in conducting with Prof. Christian Ehwald and piano with Prof. Fabio Bidini, both at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. Whilst a student he was mentored by Daniel Barenboim. In 2013 he won First Prize in the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg. As a pianist, Lahav Shani made his solo recital debut at the Boulez Saal in Berlin in July 2018. He has play-directed piano concerti with many orchestras, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. He also has considerable experience performing chamber music, appearing recently at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Cologne Philharmonie and the Verbier Festival.

All of our private events are non-profit, but professionally produced to provide attendees with a comfortable environment to engage with the arts community, and take place in various venues throughout our great city.
