YAD VASHEM-New Episode on Yad Vashem’s Podcast: On the Holocaust

In November, 1940, the German occupiers of Warsaw forced nearly 400,000 Jews into 1.3 square miles of land, then walled off the neighborhood. That’s when a group of Jews got together to document what was happening. They wrote of disease, starvation and torture, both physical and psychological, but also of themselves, their families and the brief moments of normalcy amid all the horror. This was the Oneg Shabbat archive, and it is our primary record of the Warsaw Ghetto to this day. Tune in to a new episode of Yad Vashem’s podcast “On the Holocaust” that will examine this fascinating chapter in Holocaust history.
The Power of Love during the Holocaust
Among the many inspiring stories of resilience that depict the experiences of the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust, it is the heartrending love stories that have emerged that serve as the ultimate proof that despite the horror of that bleak and devastating period, the human spirit and the will to live could not be extinguished. Love restored hope, love had the power to heal, love was a reason to survive. Join us to hear some of these amazing and uplifting stories in a special lecture via Zoom by Yad Vashem’s Sheryl Ochayon, on 14 February 2020, 8:00 pm Israel time. Click here to register.
Days of Ruin: The Jews of Munkacs During the Holocaust
Raz Segal
The book provides a comprehensive and well-documented account of the tragic fate of the Jews of Munkács (Mukachevo) from the incorporation of the town in Hungary in November 1938 to the deportation of the overwhelming majority of the community to their deaths in Auschwitz in May 1944. It gives a moving and shocking account of how the “Final Solution” of the Jewish Question was implemented in a single town in greater Hungary, and documents fully how this mass murder was carried out by the Hungarian Police Force and Army with only limited German assistance.
