EDUCATION
Chief Executive Gillian Merronand Education Policy Advisor Dawn Waterman visited JCoSS School to give a workshop to students between years 10 and 12 with the aim of giving them the skills to be effective leaders in their communities. These range from event planning to community organising.

Sheila Gewolb met Beverley-Jane Stewart, the Jewish award-winning artist, to discuss possible collaboration with the Jewish Living Experience programme. Beverley-Jane’s work depicts the history of the British Jewish community, linking synagogues with the past and present local communities, and explores the relationship between Jewish and British identity.

Jonathan Arkush and Vice Presidents Marie van der Zyland Sheila Gewolb attended the AJEX Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

Grassroots and Advocacy Consultant Steven Jaffe spoke alongside Councillor Rishi Shori, leader of Bury Council, at an event organised by the Hindu Jewish Association of Manchester, co-chaired by Louis Rappaport and Dr Giradari Bahn of the Hindu community. The event discussed Israel and India: a growing friendship and was hosted by Jackson’s Row Synagogue.
Steven Jaffe co-organised and spoke at the Balfour centenary celebration at Stormont, home of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Over 200 attended, including members of the House of Lords, Commons and Northern Ireland Assembly. Speakers included Sharon Bar-li, Deputy Ambassador of Israel, Rabbi David Singer of the Belfast Jewish community, historian Roy Thurley, and David Parsons, Vice President of the International Christian Embassy of Jerusalem (ICEJ). The event was hosted by Peter Weir MLA, former Minister of Education in the Northern Ireland executive, and Israeli songs were performed by Tally Koren.

Sheila Gewolb met Rabbi Michael Rose of Cardiff United Synagogue and Chaplain Achmed al Tisi to discuss joint concerns about Cardiff Coroner’s Court moving to Aberdare.
ARTS
The Board of Deputies sponsored a screening of the film ‘Remember Baghdad’ at JW3 last week. Senior Vice President Richard Verber introduced the film, explaining that this was the third year that the Board of Deputies had sponsored the UK Jewish Film Festival. The film has particular resonance for the Board of Deputies as one of its main interviewees is Edwin Shuker, Vice Chair of the International Division. Jonathan Arkush and Treasurer Stuart MacDonald also attended. You can also see the film at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley on December 3 and at the British Academy SW1 on December 6.
